IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR RACC CLUB RIDES

Communication is key during any club ride and it's each riders responsibility to ensure that hand signals and messages are fed up and down the group. We have a large number of riders who are experienced in group riding so if you are new to RACC and group cycling always 'follow the leader' and 'do what we do'. If we all communicate and look out for each other then our goal will be achieved - we will all stay SAFE and enjoy our cycling!

On each club run safety comes first so we will set off in groups so that each ability level is catered for and groups don't get too big out on the road. Groups Of 8 Cyclists Is Good And Can Be Easily Manage By The Group Leader.

Please have a think which group best suits your level of experience, skill, fitness and ability. If you are in any doubt, please speak to John Campbell or any of our group leaders as listed below and they can advise you based on your previous experience and fitness levels.

Dependant on numbers RACC will have the following groups at each run;

  1. Steady Group, aimed at less experienced and existing members 12/14mph average.
  2. Development Group, more experienced riders at a quicker pace 14/16mph) average.
  3. Lead Group, experienced riders at a faster pace 16/18mph average.
  4. Race Group, experienced Riders 18/20mph + average.

Race Group to start 1st 

Lead Group - 2nd 

Development Group - 3rd

Steady Group - 4th 

The main reason for the groups to start in this order is to accommodate anyone who has a bike mechanical or puncture or can't hold the group that they are cycling in. This will give them time to fix their bike and then be able to join one of the following groups coming up from behind.

RUN PREPARATION / SAFETY
We expect all our members and those who are joining our group to make sure your bike is safe - check your chain, brakes, wheels, rims and steering. Also ensure that nothing is loose (especially mudguards).

Check your tyres - worn tyres are the single biggest preventable cause of punctures. Multiple punctures, apart from being a pain, won't endear you to other riders waiting for you on a cold day!! Make sure you know how to fix a puncture !! 

You are likely to need the following equipment:

  • At least one, but preferably two, spare inner tubes.
  • A working pump.
  • Puncture repair kit - for those awful days when two tubes aren't enough.
  • Tyre levers.
  • A multi tool - to adjust gears etc.
  • Other optional tools e.g. chain breaker.
  • Even in winter hydration is important, so each rider should carry a drinks bottle.
  • Money - for the cafe stop and emergencies.
  • Waterproof jacket.
  • Solid carbohydrate source eg banana, raisins, jelly babies.
  • RACC Group Leaders should Encourage riders to step up a group if they are clearly capable of riding in a faster group.
  • RACC ask that riders should take the guidance of the group leaders. After all they are taking the time to support the club ride.
  • Ensure the group leaders are identified at the start of each cycle. Club leaders should take the time to explain why the groups ride in that particular way. i.e. do not half wheel to reduce the risk of crashing, also rotations are carried out to share the workload across the group.
  • The communication to riders should be carried out in a clear and constructive manner.
  • Shouts and hand signals need to be repeated up or down each group. You should not assume that everyone has heard the shout within a group.
  • Group leaders and other riders should always have the confidence to share their knowledge and pass instructions to maintain the smooth running of the group.
  • Riders should not pull through too fast or too slow when rotating. The group leaders should make sure the riders are rotating smoothly and safely.
  • Tri Bars  and Time Trial bikes are not to be used on club rides as these bikes are not suitable for group riding.

RACC and its club members accept no responsibility for the safety of anyone participating in group rides, and no liability in the event of an accident. We expect each participant in our club rides to consider their own safety as well as others in the group as a priority.
